A note for the singer

Everyone has a voice.
Yours is unique.

The human voice is, arguably, the most remarkable instrument of all, and the most personal. As the most immediate form of expression available to us, the voice can carry pain, sadness, joy and anger with a sensitivity and intuitiveness no external instrument can match. It is also, quietly, the hardest instrument to teach. Every voice is different. Every body is different. Every person's relationship with their own sound is different.

Our approach is structured but never formulaic. Like every instrumentalist, singers need education, practice, and constant care to develop their latent potential. We start with breath. We build through warm-ups, lip trills, scale work and resonance training. We extend the range. We teach diction, dynamics, vibrato. We train the ear in parallel with the voice, because a singer who cannot hear cannot sing.

You will work across blues, gospel, pop, rock, Bollywood and Indian ragas, and each genre teaches the voice something different. Pop teaches phrasing. Blues teaches feel. Bollywood teaches melodic ornament. Ragas teach pitch precision. By the end of the semester you will not just sing better; you will be a more versatile musician with a broader palette to draw from.

Whether you are seven or seventy-five, beginner or experienced, this is a course built for the long arc: finding your voice and learning to use it well, on a stage and off.

Warm-up & flexibility

Lip trills. Ascending and descending major and minor scales. Tongue and jaw release work. Agility exercises across syllables to improve pitching accuracy and rhythmic competence.

Range & register

Chest voice, middle voice, head voice and the transitions between them. Mixed voice. Extending range without strain. Belting safely. Falsetto control.

P / 04

Tone & resonance

Vocal placement. Forward, mask, chest resonance. Identifying your natural tone and shaping it. Cleaning up the breathiness, the nasality, the throatiness. Sounding like you, only clearer.

P / 05

Dynamics & expression

Power. Softness. Vibrato. Phrasing. Rests & silence as musical choices. Building emotional range, making one note feel different in twelve different ways.

P / 06

Diction & articulation

Consonant placement. Vowel shaping. Lyric clarity at speed. Singing in English, Hindi, and the language of the song you brought to class.

P / 07 · Musicianship

Theory & the ear

Staff notation. Intervals. The circle of fifths. Triads, chord progressions, ragas, swaras. Computing the key of a song by ear. Twelve weekly classes alongside vocal practice.

P / 08

Performance & genre

What students say

Singers, in their
own words.

A small selection from public reviews and student notes, lightly trimmed.

I now know that I only had skill, but no training of the voice. This was the first place to even tell me there are things like chest register and head voice.

I came all the way from Haryana to Bangalore just to learn vocals. The courses were super amazing; you don't just learn to sing but also how to compose. The jam room is where you learn the most.

I learnt not only what goes into music but everything from perception, to production, to timing, stage presence and band dynamics. The lessons are structured and organised. One of the best decisions I've made.

The faculty's expertise and guidance has made me a way better singer than I ever was. The gigs in front of a live audience are an absolute treat; the time at NSM has changed my life for the good.

My journey has been amazing. I joined to learn Hindustani vocals and have come way ahead from where I started. The theory classes helped me understand music better, listen better, and eventually sing better.

My vocal teacher was frank and blunt, and that way I learnt exactly where to improvise. I didn't just learn about music, but new perspectives on how to enjoy it. Level 1 was a lot of fun.

If you're a total beginner looking for a place that wouldn't intimidate you, this is the perfect place to start. And if you're already a pro, the teachings will help you reach a level you didn't know was possible.

The honest questions

Frequently asked.

I've never sung before. Can I really start now?

Yes. Foundation assumes nothing. We start at the very first day with breath, posture, and how to make a single note feel supported. The voice you have today is the voice we will train.

My voice cracks / I sing flat / I sound nasal. Can it be fixed?

Almost always, yes. These are technique issues, not voice issues. Most "I can't sing" beliefs are actually breath-support, register-transition, or resonance-placement problems, all teachable.

What's the age range?

From age 7 upwards, no upper limit. We've taught singers in their seventies. Children who haven't hit puberty work on different exercises than adult voices; both are welcome.

Western technique applied to Hindustani / Bollywood?

Yes. That's the model. Breath support and resonance are universal. We layer the genre-specific ornament (gamak, meend, harkat) on top, taught by faculty fluent in both traditions.

Private or group classes?

Both. Private is recommended for vocals because the voice is so personal, but small-group batches are excellent for harmony, ear training, and stage practice.

What if I miss a class?

Every live session is recorded in HD and shared privately. You'll also receive faculty notes, vocal exercises, and supplementary practice tracks.

How much should I practise?

Twenty minutes a day is enough. Vocal practice is dose-controlled, not duration-controlled. Over-singing causes more setbacks than under-practising.

Do I need to play an instrument too?

No, but knowing piano basics helps. The 12 musicianship hours include a small amount of keyboard work for ear training. You don't need to be a pianist, just a curious one.

Can I learn from outside India?

Yes. We have students across 30+ countries. Time zones are accommodated through weekday-morning, evening, and weekend slots.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes, a graded performance-based certificate from Nathaniel School of Music, reflecting your progress in technique, pitch, range, repertoire, and performance.

Will I perform somewhere?

Every semester ends with jam sessions and a live concert. Performances are featured on our Instagram and recorded for your portfolio.

Can I try a class first?

We don't run individual trial classes. To preview the teaching style, browse the 2,395+ free tutorials or the YouTube channel.
